Remember recording is just capturing an emotion. All great recordings start with a great song, a great arrangement and a great performance. An engineer/producer should be basically transparent to the such an event only spotting obvious problems Sometimes when invited into a song or project he or she can ad creative input enhancing a song or project.
I seem to learn more when just recording the event, but it's a special privilege when the artist asks me to participate.
